What's an Enrolled Agent?
An EA is licensed by the IRS, after showing competence in taxation through stringent, comprehensive testing. They are empowered to represent taxpayers for audits, collections and appeals before the IRS. Unlike attorneys and CPAs, who may or may not focus on taxes, all EAs specialize in taxation.
The EA profession dates to 1884 when Congress acted to regulate persons who represent citizens in dealings with the US Dept. of Treasury.
EAs must complete at least 24 hours of continuing education (CPE) per year, including ethics. Membership in the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA), requires at least 30 hours of CPE per year. NAEA members are part of a network of experienced, well-trained professionals who work for taxpayers to see that the tax code is fairly and reasonably enforced.
